Identity thieves are at it again! The Australian Tax Office has released an alert for small businesses to be cautious about the security of their business details.
Recently there have been a few cases, of identity thieves fraudulently obtaining AUSkeys that are linked to legitimate businesses. These AUSkeys give access to the Business Portal, where fraudulent BAS can be lodges and bank details updated to accounts that are outside of the business’s control. Although the ATO was wable to detect the activity and quickly took action, the threat is still out there. The ATO has recommended the following steps to help protect your business:
- Check who has access to your business’s AUSkey
- Remove access for past employees
- Check the details on record are correct, such as financial institute and contact details.
